Hurricane Helene’s storm surge struck Florida fast and hard when it slammed into Gulf Coast communities near St. Petersburg

As a tropical wave meanders through the Gulf of Mexico heading into the weekend and into early next week, Florida may see some heavy rainfall.

An area of low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico could bring several inches of rain to parts of Florida, including the Tampa Bay area, by early next week.

Spotty storms will be possible on Saturday but the chance of rain will increase Sunday into early next week due to the disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico. Numerous to widespread storms will be possible with the threat of flooding Sunday through early next week.

The president toured the hard-hit Big Bend area with U.S. Senator Rick Scott and other state, federal and local officials.

President Joe Biden's Thursday tour is covering the Big Bend region of Florida and also Ray City, Georgia. Both were hard-hit by the Category 4 storm.

The trip marked the second consecutive day that Biden had surveyed impacted areas a week after the storm left much of the Southeast reeling.
