Relief efforts continue in Asheville and the Western North Carolina area where a major disaster due to Tropical Storm Helene has left communities devastated, roads impassable and thousands without power.

There have been 10 confirmed fatalities in Buncombe County as a result of Tropical Storm Helene, the sheriff said at a Sept. 29, 10 a.m. briefing.

Helene brought devastating flooding, power outages, infrastructure crumbling and a lack of phone and internet access to Western North Carolina over the weekend. So far, 30 people have reportedly died in Buncombe County.

Mercy Urgent Care has walk-in locations open at the following addresses from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.: West Asheville: 1201 Patton Ave. Weaverville: 61 Weaver Blvd. Brevard: 22 Trust Lane Waynesville: 120 Frazier St.

The Buncombe County Sheriff Quentin Miller said four additional deaths have been confirmed in Buncombe County, raising the total to 61.

Water management officials said restoring water would likely take weeks to repair catastrophic damage to entire system with access limited.

The death toll is now up to nearly 60 in Buncombe County alone. Sheriff Quentin Miller held a news conference Wednesday and confirmed that 57 people had died in Buncombe County to that point.
